How to use chatgpt for instagram captions
ChatGPT works really well for creating instagram captions. I’ve tried lots of different prompts before finding one that gives the best captions.
Prompt examples from August 2024. Tool information updated October 2026; ChatGPT was not retested.
Here is how I write instagram captions with chat gpt.
- First, you’ll need a chat gpt account (It’s free)
- Login to your account at https://chatgpt.com/
- Start a new chat by typing in the chat box
3 different Chat GPT prompts I tried
To find the best results I tried the following different prompts. I’ll show you which one worked best below.
Generate 3 social media captions related to family vacations
You are a marketing assistant. Create 3 social media instagram captions related to family vacations.
You are a social media and marketing expert. Write 3 highly engaging and funny instagram captions based on family vacations.
But I knew I could still do better! Winning prompt below.
Adding styles and tone of voice to your prompt
To get the perfect caption you will also want to tell chat gpt what tone to write the caption in. For example, do you want a “funny” caption, an “inspirational” caption or a “romantic” caption. Adding these styles really improves the output from the prompt. Here is a list of tones I would include.
- Funny
- Inspirational
- Romantic
- Cute
- Formal
- Happy
- Serious
How to keep captions short
Chat GPT likes to write long captions by default. In most cases you want short snappy captions. To do this I added “very short” to the prompt. This seemed to do the trick!
Why are there hashtags in my caption?
In my original examples, ChatGPT often included hashtags with the captions. If you only want the caption text, delete the hashtags rather than the caption. I found that asking for no hashtags did not always remove them, so check the output before posting.
The best ChatGPT prompt for instagram captions
After trying different variations here is my final prompt to write great instagram captions using chat gpt.
Winning prompt 🥇
You are a social media and marketing expert. Write 3 very short funny Instagram captions related to family vacations
Here is a screenshot of the example results. I thought the last caption was really funny!
But wait, there is an even easier way (free & no login required)
It’s pretty annoying logging in and writing a new prompt every time you want a quick caption.
So, I built a free AI Instagram caption generator. It generates caption ideas from your topic and writing style, without needing you to write a prompt each time. It is a separate tool from ChatGPT.
Just tell the tool what you want your caption to be about and the writing style.

Let me know what you think and how to improve it through my contact page. I’m thinking of adding more writing styles, so if there are any you would like added, let me know.
Bonus prompt – Extra funny captions
If you want your captions to be extra funny then I found this prompt worked pretty well.
You are an award winning comedian who specializes in short and snappy jokes. Help me write some smart and witty instagram captions which are short and to the point but will make people laugh. Write 3 hilarious captions about family vacations
Happy prompting!
